DX-One Professional MK 2 Active Antenna
Military- and government
monitoring branches request continuously for better antennas.New
techniques, such as high speed frequency hopping, wideband spread spectrum
modulation and self-tuning ALE link systems all demand omni-directional antennas with
extremely high intercept points, very low noise, rejection against
polarisation fading and constant sensitivity over the complete radio
frequency spectrum from ELF to lower VHF. Orders from the military made it possible for RF Systems to develop a new
high power amplifier for the DX-One professional. The special amplifier has been incorporated into the
new, improved "DX-One
Professional MK 2", an active antenna for professional and commercial applications.
The DX-One Professional MK 2
offers a constant sensitivity over the frequency range 20 kHz - 60 MHz and
is
sensitive to signals coming in from any direction and from any
polarisation, thanks to the combination of 2 loops, radials and
a vertical receiving element. Shortwave signals travel from transmitter to
receiver through a series of "hops" involving refraction by the
ionosphere and the earth's surface.
Each refraction leads to a change in polarisation. The ionosphere is not a
perfect reflector and in fact it is in constant motion.
Therefore, a received signal changes continuously in polarisation. Some
antennas are only horizontally polarised (dipoles, longwires and
log-periodic antennas). Others are only vertically polarised (monopoles,
or active antennas with a rod or whip). These "single polarisation"
types of antennas give on top of the normal signal strength fading an
extra
variable signal strength during reception of a long distance multi-hop
station. This problem of "polarisation fading" is particularly
noticeable during the reception of weak, long distance signals and/or with
frequency-hopping and FSK data techniques.
As the multi-polarised DX-One Professional MK 2 is sensitive to all types
of polarisation, the problem of polarisation fading
is nearly eliminated, although normal signal strength fading remains as
with all other antennas. Reception of distant, weak stations is however
highly improved.
Another outstanding feature of the DX-One Pro is the excellent resistance
to intermodulation problems. In the long-, medium- and short-wave regions
of the spectrum, some signals are in the order of microvolts. But strong
signals can often deliver hundreds of millivolts. Amplification of
literally thousands of signals can lead tointermodulation products which
will mask the weak signals. In the past, attempts to solve this problem
were made by using selective antennas, which were either manually or
automatically tuned to the desired frequency.
But frequency hopping and computer driven receivers make it impossible to
use this technique anymore, also because it helps
only to avoid second order intermodulation problems. The DX-One
Professional MK 2 is a wide-band antenna. This allows quick frequency
changes of the receiver by computer- or memory tuning. Wideband coverage
is possible thanks to the very high 2nd order intercept point of no less
than + 80 dBm and a 3rd order intercept point of + 52 dBm or better.
These extremely high intercept points ( the highest in the world) ensure
that the intermodulation products are weaker than the background
atmospheric and man-made noise. The DX-One Professional MK 2 is therefore
as quiet as a passive antenna. The noise level of the amplifier is just
3.5 dB. This is lower than the atmospheric noise , which assures that even
the weakest signals can be received.
The system gain of the DX - One Professional MK 2 is + 10 dB.This ensures
that even weak, long distance stations reach a level, whereby the AGC of
the receiver keeps the signal strength
constant. Strong signal handling is also no problem up to + 20
dBm (2.24 volts), so under normal conditions overloading cannot not occur.
The DX-One Professional MK 2 has
extensive protections against static discharges during thunderstorms and
very high field strengths from transmitters in
the vicinity of the antenna.
Professional Construction
The DX -One Pro is made of
high-impact plastic and a weatherproof aluminum alloy. The amplifier
is protected from outside interference sources by a stainless steel
housing. All mounting hardware is also
made of
stainless steel. The antenna is filled with CFC-free polyurethane foam,
completely watertight and therefore
resistant all
types of climate. It is made to withstand wind speeds of up to 160
km/hr. The DX-One Pro has a large
mounting head which is made of a heavy duty weather resistant
aluminum alloy. The antenna needs to be mounted on
a standing pipe with a diameter between
38 and 50 mm. An antenna clamp and a short standing pipe are included. In
its standard
version the antenna is delivered with an S0239 connector in the base
which accepts a PL-259 plug, optionally
available is the DX - one Pro/N, whereby the mounting base has an N
connector.
Indoor Control Unit
The DX-One Professional MK 2 is
supplied with an indoor control unit built into a metal case. This indoor
unit is
fitted with a step-attenuator (+10 to - 40 dB) so overloading of the
receiver by strong nearby signals can
be
prevented. A mediumwave suppression (bandstop) filter is also incorporated.
This makes it possible to listen
with full sensitivity to the shortwave and longwave ranges
without the receiver being overloaded by strong local
mediumwave stations. Signals between
520 and 1700 kHz are suppressed when the mediumwave filter is activated.
The indoor
unit has two independent receiver outputs. The DX-One Professional MK 2
can therefore feed two receivers at the
same time. Each receiver can be tuned as if it is connected to its own
antenna, since there are no
mutual interference problems. The high level of isolation ensures no
unwanted heterodynes or signal loss.
The double-insulated power supply in the indoorunit is fully stabilized
and is available either in 95 - 130 volts,110-140 volts
or 210-240 volts AC, 50/60 Hz. The unit is short-circuit
protected. If a short-circuit should occur in the coaxial cable to
the antenna, no damage will occur. In
addition, the power supply is also fitted with filters which suppress
mainsborne
interference. The indoor unit comes with S0 239 connectors. A version
fitted with N-connectors is also
available as an option.
The DX-One Pro has been approved for and is currently in use by embassies,
as well as military and government
monitoring stations. Naturally it is also CE certified.

The DX 500 antenna system is designed for yachts, apartments, flats and other applications where no space for a large antenna or several antennas for different bands is available. The advantage of the DX 500 system is that the antenna it selves is extremely small (just 40 cm long and 32 mm diameter),
so it hardly can be seen when mounted for instance on a balcony rail. The antenna is made of stainless steel and it can withstand any climate. One of the remarkable features is that the antenna covers the enormous frequency range from 30 kHz - 550 MHz. This offers the possibility to receive long wave, maritime beacons, Navtex, medium wave, shortwave, 27 MHz CB,VHF low band with police and other users, FM broadcast, civil- and militaire airbands, VHF high band, Band 3 DAB broadcast, amateur frequencies and the complete UHF bands. A range of indoor units, with frequency selective- or wideband outputs make it possible to use several receivers, for instance a shortwave receiver, a DAB receiver and a wideband scanner at the same time.
